How to Choose Patterns

Choosing patterns for home décor isn’t always easy. There are so many to choose from that the decision can seem overwhelming.

The most important thing to do when choosing patterns is to first figure out what kinds of patterns appeal to you. Do you like plaids, florals, geometrics, damasks, or something else altogether? Pay attention when you’re in furniture stores, looking at magazines and visiting friend’s homes. What patterns stand out to you? What patterns do you find calming or soothing? Do you like things that really jump out at you or do you prefer patterns that blend into the background. Pay close attention and take note of the ones you like.

Another great way to figure out what you like is to look around your home. What kind of china pattern do you have? What are the colors? The style? What does you bedding look like? Do you have sheets or pillows that have patterns? What about other objects in your home? Look around and see what patterns you can find. These can be great jumping off points for choosing other patterns for your home decor. Look at the colors, styles and motifs. If you have a modern but elegant china pattern there’s a good chance a modern, elegant wallpaper will also appeal to you.

Also, don’t forget to look at your closet. If you wear a lot of geometrics, florals or plaids then there’s a good chance you’ll be drawn to similar motifs for your home décor.

Remember when working with patterns that they should connect to the room and to each other – whether in color, style or motif. Not everything needs to match, but it does need to complement. Stick with what you love and have fun and you’ll be just fine.
