Decorate Your House for Fall

1. Touch
Fall and winter have always been very tactile seasons for me. There’s something very iconic about that first evening sleeping under an extra blanket, or feeling the specific sensation of wool flannel next to my skin. So, as I start getting my own home ready for fall, it all starts with the textiles: A few wool decorative pillows, maybe even in a woodsy tartan, or a heavy gauge wool or cashmere throw for the sofa. Most anything that says “snuggle” is a great place to start.

2. Smell
Whether we’re talking about scented candles or the aroma of apple pies in the oven, smell is always one of the most evocative senses. With the new season, take a quick look at your candles and see if any need replacing. Maybe try a more woodsy scent? Or cranberry or citrus?

3. Sight
Luckily, Mother Nature has already done the lion’s share of work on this one. If you’re able to bring in some rich, autumnal russets, brassy yellows, or dark loamy greens, you’re more than halfway there. And Mother Nature is the best resource as well — think about wreaths or fresh arrangements of fall foliage to place in your entryway or bedside table.

4. Organization
Okay, being well-organized is clearly not one of the five senses, but, let’s call this one a “sense of calm.” Historically, I’m much more of a fan of “fall cleaning” than “spring cleaning.” After a long summer of outdoor activities and vacationing, I see fall as the perfect time to turn my eyes away from the garden and start getting my interiors in order. I’ve actually spent the last few weekends completely reorganizing my closets, and switching out summer clothes for my fall pieces. I find it incredibly relaxing, and it makes my morning a bit easier. I also found a long-forgotten set of antique brown transferware dishes that now fill my kitchen cupboards instead of the simple white dishes we’ve been using most of the summer. Like any calendar date, fall is the perfect time to examine our homes and get everything set for the upcoming season!
